Ergonomics in the Workplace: What is it?
Ergonomics in the workplace is a concept which has gained a lot of popularity in recent years. Although ergonomics at work is hugely important, many people fail to understand exactly what it is. A great many of us do not understand why ergonomics in the workplace is important. As a leading supplier of bespoke ergonomic chairs, we understand the importance of ergonomics and we are committed to raising awareness of the importance of ergonomics in the workplace. If you are an office worker, home working or hybrid working this applies to you!
What is Ergonomics in the Workplace?
Simply put, ergonomics is the study of humans in their working environments. The science of ergonomics aims to mould a person’s working environment around them, and not the other way round. An ergonomist will look to identify ways to boost productivity and efficiency, reduce risk or injury and minimise discomfort or accidents. There are a number of ways workstation layouts are assessed:
- Items that are used frequently are in convenient reach and in the correct position to avoid repetitive strain.
- Work surface height is appropriate for the tasks and not causing awkward or uncomfortable posture.
- Lighting is adequate and not causing eyestrain.
- The chair ‘fit’ is correct for the user and properly adjusts to the users requirements, and the workstation.
Our area of expertise is office chairs. We are all different shapes and sizes. One size does not fit all! An ergonomist will check and individual’s physical and physiological characteristics, body size and shape, fitness, strength and posture, and adapt and recommend equipment in search for ways to eliminate discomfort and the risk of injury. Pretty important, wouldn’t you say?

What is the Purpose of Ergonomics in the Workplace?
We believe it is important to stress why implementing ergonomics in the workplace is hugely important. In modern society, we are spending more and more time in work environments, at home, in an office or hybrid working, that are, historically, alien to us. An ergonomist spends time trying to identify ways to make these environments more worker friendly, and workers and their health are prioritised. Correct posture emphasised and maintained therefore ensuring people are less likely to be uncomfortable at work and injure themselves.
As our work environments shift, ergonomics attempts to align us with this shift. With the inclusion of items like adjustable desks, office chairs, monitor stands, keyboard and wrist rests needed to ensure we remain safe and healthy. An ergonomist puts the individual first, not the environment thus ensuring enhanced productivity, efficiency and morale.
